The word scapular comes from the Latin scapulae, meaning “shoulders.” Around 500–600 AD, Benedictine monks wore a long piece of fabric that hung from the front to the back over their shoulders.

• Original purpose: An apron-like garment used to protect the monastic habit during manual labor.
• Symbolism: It represented the “yoke of Christ” that the monk accepted when taking his vows. Matthew 11:29–30.

This is where the scapular became widely known. The year was 1251, in England.

1. Saint Simon Stock, Prior General of the Carmelites, was going through a difficult period. The order was close to disappearing.

2. July 16, 1251: The Virgin Mary appeared to him holding the brown Carmelite scapular and said:

“Receive, my beloved son, this Scapular of your Order, as a distinctive sign and the mark of the privilege which I have obtained for you and the children of Carmel; whoever dies wearing it shall not suffer eternal fire.”

3. The “Sabbatine Privilege”: In 1322, Pope John XXII stated that the Virgin had promised to release from Purgatory on the Saturday following their death those who:

• Wear the scapular.
• Observe chastity according to their state in life.
• Recite the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary or abstain from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Monks originally wore a large scapular that covered the entire torso. For laypeople, this was impractical.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, it was reduced to two small brown pieces of fabric joined by two cords. One rests on the chest and the other on the back. This allowed people to wear it underneath their regular clothing and participate in the devotion without being monks.

It is not a talisman or an “automatic pass to heaven.” The Vatican explains it as follows:

1. It is a sacramental: An object that prepares a person to receive grace, similar to holy water. Its meaning depends on the wearer's disposition.

2. It represents a commitment: By wearing it, you commit yourself to living like Mary: through prayer, purity, and service.

3. The imposition of the scapular: The first time, it should be imposed by a priest. If it is later damaged or lost, you may replace it yourself.

John Paul II wore the Brown Scapular of Mount Carmel from a young age. He called it “the Marian habit par excellence.”
